NEW DELHI — The herbicide-tolerant kava herbal chai will be available as an herbal tea in India by the end of this month, the country’s government said Monday.
Kava is a mild herbal tea that contains the alkaloids kava and guanine.
The new herbal tea would be the first to be available without the chemical that has been banned in the country.
It is said to have medicinal benefits.
Kavas are usually made from a combination of the leaves and roots of the kava plant and the herbicide glyphosate.
The herbicide is banned in India for its potential to be used to kill weeds, but it is not the only herbicide banned in that country.
India has also banned the herbicides dicamba and trichlorvos.
